Brief Therapy
Time-limited or brief mindfulness-based Core Process Psychotherapy can be anything from six sessions to around 40, which is equivalent to weekly meetings over about 10-12 months.
Short-term work can be just as powerful and transformative as long-term psychotherapy. Individuals might choose brief therapy because there is a particular issue they wish to work on; financial and/or time constraints might mean that open-ended therapy isn’t an option; or people may simply want to get a sense of how psychotherapy works and gain valuable resources to use in everyday life. No matter what you’re looking for, I offer an initial meeting to explore the best option for you. If we do decide to work together I’ll ask you to complete a confidential questionnaire to help you focus on what you want to gain from psychotherapy. In short-term work especially, it’s important to be as clear as possible on what you wish to achieve – and be ready to take the steps needed to do that.
My approach
In both open-ended and time-limited psychotherapy, I integrate a range of mindfulness practices, which may include guided mediation, gentle movement and breathwork, with a variety of cognitive-somatic protocols to help integrate mind and body and rapidly resolve stress and trauma. The latter includes tapping on acupressure points while attending to and naming both difficult experience as well as positive resources. (NB I guide you through the tapping points while tapping along with the corresponding points on my own body.) Tapping, also known as Emotional FreedomTechnique (EFT), is an extremely efficient way to improve connectivity within the brain and assist the flow of information and energy though the nervous system. It also helps to improve heart rate variability and reduce inflammation. In addition, tapping is a resource that you can take away and use as in everyday life. For a range of scientific research on the effectiveness of EFT tapping, see eftuniverse.com/research-studies.
